How many Tesla Robotaxis are there? Read the fleet numbers correctly

A dated Texas registry snapshot, the Model Y and Cybercab split, and why registered vehicles are different from active robotaxis.

A concrete starting point: 589 registered vehicles

Our October 5, 2026 capture of the Texas public vehicle registry contained 589 distinct VINs registered under Tesla Robotaxi, LLC: 420 Model Ys and 169 Cybercabs. Those figures describe a statewide registration list at a specific point in time. They do not count every Tesla used for ride-hailing worldwide. The live tracker carries newer captures when available; the numbers in this article remain a dated reference.

Registration is not daily availability

A registration answers whether a vehicle appears in the published roster. A dispatch observation answers whether a vehicle was visible or bookable during a particular measurement window. A completed ride shows that one trip occurred. These are separate observations. A registered vehicle could be charging, undergoing maintenance, waiting to enter service or operating outside the area a researcher observed. Treating these measurements as interchangeable produces misleading comparisons.

Compare the same geography and method

Before using any fleet-growth percentage, check the geography, observation date, vehicle models and definition of activity. Texas registrations should be compared with other Texas registration snapshots. The state list does not assign each vehicle to Austin, Dallas or Houston, so an Austin fleet estimate cannot be recovered by simply labeling the entire roster Austin. An increase in registrations is a useful expansion signal, but ride volume and operating hours are needed to evaluate utilization.

A checklist for the next fleet headline

Ask for the underlying list or source, the timestamp and the counting method. Look for duplicate VIN removal and complete pagination. Separate reported facts from estimates, and mark unknowns rather than filling them with zero. On Robotaxi Signal, the current list can be filtered by model or searched by VIN so the aggregate number can be traced back to individual public records.
